Opening Gala: Rose Tremain
Date Thursday 04 October 2007
Time 7:00 PM (19:00 hrs)
Venue The Whitworth Art Gallery
Festival Strand

For our opening night event in association with Davis Blank Furniss and the Centre for New Writing at The University of Manchester, we were delighted to welcome one of the UK’s favourite authors, Rose Tremain, to talk about her new novel, The Road Home, and to discuss historical fiction in general with Patricia Duncker. The Road Home tells the story of Lev, on his way to Britain to seek work in order to send money back to his family in Eastern Europe. Dealing with the hardships of displacement, Lev’s story gives us a fresh view of modern Britain. Rose Tremain has won many prizes including the Whitbread Novel of the Year; Restoration was shortlisted for the Booker and made into a film; and The Colour was shortlisted for the Orange Prize. Her most recent collection, The Darkness of Wallis Simpson, was shortlisted for both the First National Short Story Award and the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award.
